This is absolutely one of the most gorgeous and challenging courses I have ever played. From tee to green this course is immaculate. This was one of my stops on a golf trip and it didn’t disappoint and was the highlight of all courses played. If you love the game of golf experience how a course should be maintained!

Played today with a group of about 32 shotgun start. Staff was super accommodating. Course was in excellent shape greens were good not to fast and soft enough to stick the ball. This was my first time playing there and had a great experience. Will add this to my must play list and return soon.

We just held our annual charity golf tournament at Mattaponi Springs this past weekend. We had around 88 golfers. In addition, we rented the Manor House for three days for VIP's/sponsors, etc. It was a huge success!! Thanks to Kevin, John, as well as the owner Jim for helping make our event the best ever. This was the first year at Mattaponi as we held it in past at another golf course about an hour away. We are so glad we changed venues!! We are already booking for next year as well as maybe keeping the Manor House as well as adding another on property house for VIP/sponsors. I cannot give enough kudos to Kevin, John, and Jim on their help in making this even a huge success. The whole staff at Mattaponi Springs was great!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GOLF COURSE!!

*** Updated *** I learned that sometime after I played the course and had the experience below that renovations were done to restore the greens. I returned a few weeks ago to see for myself and saw that conditions have greatly improved. The greens have been saved, other than a few patchy spots along the collar on a handful of holes. My only suggestion would be to speed the greens up, as they are definitely slower than average. I’d estimate they were running at a 9 at best. With that being said, the improved greens and other work being done on the course (I witnessed a lot of tree removal between 9 and 18 to open up airflow I assume) make this place deserving of an improved rating. I look forward to playing again and hope the greens speed up. *** Original Post: I’ll start by saying I don’t feel comfortable giving a Star rating because it doesn’t reflect the beauty of this place from tee to almost the green…. The reviews I read prior to booking my tee times mentioned the greens being in bad shape. When I called I was told they were forced to punch them because they were pretty beat up, assuming just from a lot of play and unfixed ball marks. I booked anyway because the tee time would be about 2 1/2 weeks from the punch date. I called back 2 days prior to my tee times to check on the progress. I was told the greens came back fine other than a few rough spots on the outer edges of a few of the greens. The guy followed up by saying that they were manipulating pin placements so that those areas wouldn’t come into play. The layout is beautiful, tall pines line just about every hole but done really come into play unless you’re hitting it poorly. A few ponds with beautiful rock walls are a great addition. The tee boxes are in great shape and the fairways are great to hit off of and were pristine, I don’t think I saw a divot all day. The distances of the holes are very fair, you’re forced to hit your spots on a few holes. The undulation in the fairways challenge and punish long hitters that miss their marks on some holes. The greens…absolutely atrocious. Zoom in on the pic I added. They are unplayable with both disease growth AND crabgrass on every hole, not on the edges as I was told but on a majority of every green. They just covered the growth with sand. We had a lot of putts tracking in and hit a bump or sand patch inside of 2 inches and kick sideways. I don’t believe they can save these greens and will need to shut the place down in order to replace them. This is a real shame and great failure by the GM of golf and greenskeeper, if they have either. I feel as if I was lied to and pretty much cheated out of my money. It’s as if they took the greens from a cow pasture course and transferred them to a beautiful destination golf course. I would LOVE to play this course again on playable greens, and would probably do so multiple times a year if they fix things but for now I’d recommend staying away until things are fixed. The only reason I give 2 stars is because the good mentioned doesn’t deserve to be associated with the greens. Otherwise I’d give 0 stars because the greens are truly unplayable unless you’re ok with picking up and giving yourself a 2Putt once you hit the green.
